The Robertson Family Portraits

I had so much fun with Allison and Marc and baby Samantha. At just over 4 weeks old she was absolutely the biggest cutie pie! Such a doll!

Grumpy Old Man

As an artist pent up in a cubicle all day working nimbly on insurance and putting out fires for other people, sometimes a little walk with my camera is needed. Well today was one of those days that aloud for a lunch break and a meander down Pleasant Valley Road. After stopping at the liquor store by the 3 way stop at Bucks Bar Road, you know that intersection next to the creepy house that everyone said was haunted? Yes, fitting for Halloween I thought. Well next to said liquor store is this quaint office looking space that I have never seen occupied but has recently had an address added by the door. Being the photographer that I am and seeing two old lonely barrels I decided that this would be a great senior portrait or engagement session location. 

Until I met the owner of the property. I immediately thought Grumpy Old Men times ten. As he tried to quickly cross the street from the Haunted House at the Intersection he yells at me "What the hell are you doing?" So I replied as I do when I am somewhere shooting and the obvious question is asked, "I am a local photographer and this would make a great location for some portraits. I wanted to document this spot so that I may not forget about it."

The look on this man's face was by far the most evil look that I have seen from a person asking what I am doing. Imagine a 6' 7" or so 300 pound grumpy old man standing in front of you fuming. So I says to this man, "I have no problem in leaving but if you do not tell me that you have a problem and to leave I will continue on about my business of photographing the pretty things of this Earth." 

With that and a few ugly words in my direction I took what he said as "get off my property!" Now I know the truth. The old haunted house at the corner is not so much ghostly haunted as is haunted with negative old close mindedness. I think that I shall make him a print of the pretty little things of this Earth and hand deliver it next week.

As you might remember, the head of a company survived 9/11  because his son started kindergarten.
       
Another fellow was alive because it was
His turn to bring donuts.

One woman was late because her
Alarm clock didn't go off in time.

One was late because of being stuck on the NJ Turnpike
Because of an auto accident.

One of them
Missed his bus.

One spilled food on her clothes and had to take
Time to change.

Car wouldn't start.

One couldn't
Get a taxi.

The one that struck me was the man
Who put on a new pair of shoes that morning,
Took the various means to get to work
But before he got there, he developed

The day has arrived... January 21, 2011...

And we are off! Upon arrival I could already feel the love and high spirits in the air. As family started to trickle in for the ceremony there were many smiles, hugs and just a few tears. 

Shortly after the hellos, how have you beens and the hugs the ceremony was under way.

Now that we have witnessed this beautiful union, I now pronounce you man and wife!

Off we go the celebrate this wonderful day and the start of this rad adventure.

Surrounded by friends and family. I would like to just say congratulations to you both, you crazy lovebirds.

ps- The cake was absolutely amazing!

Wedding Photography Fun

I only thought it appropriate with shooting my first wedding of the year that this blog be all about the little tidbits of such a special occasion!

Here are a few things that I keep fresh in my mind when preparing to shoot a wedding:

1. Stimulate Photography's Shot List: A 'Who's Who' list of shots wanted by the couple. Having this worked out about a week or so in advance has helped me tremendously with time management throughout the wedding. Keeping time with the couple is of much importance as you do not want to slow the process at all trying to figure out who is who and whom should be photographed with whom.
2. Location Location Location: Shoot the surrounding area! Couples love looking back to the memories of where they got hitched, what the weather was and how the location was decorated. It is a great idea to scout out the location before the day of the wedding just to be sure you are fully prepared. If you are unable to shoot from a specific standpoint now you have other options to quickly choose from. This way you will never miss that ever important shot!
3. Shoot everything. Many couples want to look back on this set of photos and remember everything from the smallest button on the wedding dress to Uncle Joe being drunk in the back section. Well, maybe more so the buttons and things... These shots will create depth to the wedding book as well. This will only help you in the end and will leave your wedding couple and family in awe of your work!
4. What format will you be shooting in? I always shoot in RAW when working a wedding. This will offer you more editing options and flexibility. Most all wedding present themselves with tricky shooting. From low-light situations to backgrounds shooting in RAW will offer you more than JPEG etc.
5. The day before the wedding make sure that all your batteries are charged, you have extra memory cards and an itinerary of the days events. Make sure you know how to get to each location and have extra routes mapped out. There is no reason to be late and miss the shots of the couple arriving or that special moment between father and daughter. Be prepared!
6. Last but not least by far, have fun! This is the absolute must. Weddings are about celebration, they should be fun! Having fun will relax the people around you which will in turn show more of their personality in your photographs. Relaxed people equals a much easier time shooting in an already crazy photo session!

Of course there is a list the size of Texas of little tips to remember for wedding photography but these are just a few that came to mind. With much research online as well as reading books, experience at wedding photography will be a great teacher. 

I am looking forward to the 2011 wedding season! So far it has been filled with so much love, laughs and new friends!
